Chieftain Park Playground Renovation
Oct 9th: The existing playground at Chieftain Park will be closing within the next couple of weeks (est. Oct. 26th) for a significant and exciting renovation project. This project will require the playground project area to be fully closed and inaccessible for a period of time to help protect the safety of the park patrons. City crews will begin removing the existing equipment within the next several weeks to help make room for all-new playground equipment and surfacing which will be installed by the equipment supplier. The estimated date of completion of the new playground project is March 1, 2027.

November '25: TRC/City of Tonganoxie publish RFQ
December '25: Playground Committee narrows RFQ Applicants
January '26: Playground Committee interviews/selects Cunningham Rec/Game Time
Feb-May '26: Preliminary meetings with Cunningham Rec
June '26: Community Survey conducted
July '26: Review survey results
Oct/Nov '26: Demolation/Installation scheduled to begin.
Dec '26-Feb. '27: Construction
March '27: Opening 

The Chieftain Park  project was originally completed in 2003 and stands as a testament to the dedicated and forward thinking Commission members, staff and supporters. Chieftain Park is a beautiful green space located at 235 N. Main St. across from the Tonganoxie High School, off of HWY 24-40. Please stop by and check out our park!
Reservations can be made for the shelter house at Chieftain. There is no charge to reserve the shelter. You can check the availability of the shelter on the CALENDAR on this site. You may also reserve the facility online. Create an account or log in to your dashboard at www.tongierec.org and select Facility Reservation button. Print a copy of your receipt and have it with you during your reservation.
