Youth Activities

This 6-1/2 hour course covers safety skills, child care skills, life and business skills; as well as CPR instruction and manikin practice. Space is limited to the first 6 participants to register.
The class will be held at TRC's Activity Center (300 E. US 24/40) in the Activity Room.

Coach J's Basketball Clinic will be held after school at the Tonganoxie Elementary School in the small gym. This basketball clinic will begin right after school and will conclude each day at 4:30pm. Each age group will meet M/T/Thur for their designated week corresponding to their grade level. We will NOT meet on Wednesdays. This clinic is for Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade. Participants will learn skills related to basketball from the help of Tonganoxie's favorite coach, Coach J. 

Kindergarten: January 12th, January 13th, January 15th

1st Grade: January 26th, January 27th, January 29th

2nd Grade: February 2nd, February 3rd, February 5th

Fee: $20/$30 (District/Non-District)

We're setting up a Sensory Studio at the Rec Center for small hands to explore! Spend an hour or so with us exploring textures, colors, and sounds. 

We will have activities at the center to play with:

- Shaving cream table

- Variety of Sensory bins

Create & take-home some DIY activities:

- Water bead tile

- Oobleck

- Rubber band ball

Students will learn how to get started crocheting, chain stitch, and single crochet stitch. They will also learn how to end a project. Students will learn about different kinds of yarn and hooks. (1 session)

Students will review basic stitches, learn about how to change colors, and learn how to double crochet. (1 session)

Students will learn how to read a pattern to make a mug rug with fringe. (1 session)

TRC is hosting the Tonganoxie Arts Council and the Tonganoxie Community Historical Society for a Patriotic Paint activity!

Do you remember seeing those painted wooden boards on the light poles around Downtown Tonganoxie? Those are thanks to TAC's members and participants who spend time painting them each year. 

This year they are teaming up with TCHS to celebrate the Declaration of Independence's 250th anniversary year!

Head to the Rec Center for a morning of red, white, and blue paint, friends, and patriotic celebration!

This is an internet-assisted course.  
Participants must complete the online course through the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks.  You will not be allowed to participate in the field day if you cannot produce a completion certificate to the instructors at registration in the morning.  You can find this free course online at https://ksoutdoors.gov/Services/Education/Hunter/Hunter-Ed-Courses/Hybrid-Course

Additionally, you will be going on a short hike to a nearby outdoor shooting range located on site.  Please do not bring any firearms.  Guns and ammunition will be provided. 

Dress appropriately for the weather.  The class is in a metal building and if the weather is hot/cold it will be warm/cool in the building.  I suggest dressing in layers.  The shooting range may also be warm/cool/muddy, so wear appropriate shoes/jackets.
